Alpha Tau Chapter History
In November 1952, Mrs. Hattie Crawford, Mrs. Ina Murl Moore, Miss Edith Egan, Miss Irdine Shirey of Winfield, Mrs. Flora Lazenby of Brilliant, Mrs. Nila June Gilbert and Miss Frances Cantrell of Hackleburg, were invited into Beta State by members of the Iota Chapter under the leadership of Dr. Miriam Locke of Jasper, Alabama. This meeting took place in the home economics department of the Winfield High School. After the initiation, the group enjoyed a social hour along with delicious refreshments served by Mrs. Bernice Phillips and her students.
To serve as an organizing group for a new chapter in the near future, Miss Lucille Mixon from Hackleburg of Beta State and Mrs. Bertha Gann from Winfield of Alpha XI Chapter joined the seven initiates. These initiates will be charter members of the new group.
After a number of letters were written, several phone calls made, and questions asked, a meeting was scheduled to be held in Winfield on January 17, 1953 for the purpose of organizing a new chapter called Alpha Tau. This meeting was held in the attractive new house of Mrs. Ina Murl Moore.
Dr. Mirian Locke, president of Beta State, was assisted in the initiation by State initiation officers, Miss Mary Clifford, president of Iota chapter, Mrs. Lenora Waldrop from Jasper, along with Mrs. B. Savage and the seven local members who had been initiated into Beta State.
When the time came to start the initiation, we found we did not have the required number for a chapter. Edith Egan slipped out and drove to Guin where she found Eunice Weeks trying to arrange a way to get to the meeting. They arrived
"a bit late" without reprimand.
The new members were Mrs. Eunice Weeks, Miss Effie Mae Logan from Guin, Mrs. Gladys Jennings, Mrs. Lorene Yarborough from Hamilton, Mrs. Louise Harris, Mrs. Jewel Baccus from Winfield, and Miss Elois Phillips from Bear Creek, who was unable to attend due to a broken hip. She was initiated later as a charter member.
Because we needed a better understanding of Delta Kappa Gamma, our first emphasis was a study of the constitution and our responsibilities. Then we followed the program theme chosen by our leaders. The members showed a great interest in the programs by participating.
We have been fortunate to have outstanding guest speakers who left us inspiring thoughts and some facts pertinent to our studies. Some of our guest through the years were as follows: Miss Frances Finley, Beta State President, visited us twice
and left these thoughts with us, "It is a lot worse to be soul hungry than to be body hungry" and concurring with Robert Browning, she added "The best is yet to be" along with "Beauty, goodness, and truth are life's unalterable realities."
Miss Mary Clifford Ray, president of IOTA Chapter, refreshed our memories on many regulations and rules of the Delta Kappa Gamma.
Mrs. Jane Wooten, Beta President, spoke to us on "Goals for Delta Kappa Gamma." She emphasized personal growth - "Learn something new", and "Greater service at home and abroad." She said, "Go somewhere! If you can't go, then do the next best thing - read!"
